What Is the Webster Technique?
MomWell Chiro Co. is an award-winning prenatal, postpartum, pediatric, and family chiropractic practice located in North Fort Worth, Texas, 76244. Our Webster-certified chiropractors provide personalized care for pregnant women, babies, children, and families throughout North Fort Worth and the surrounding DFW area.
You are pregnant, your hips or lower back have started bothering you, and someone tells you:
“You need to find a Webster-certified chiropractor.”
Maybe your doula mentioned it. Maybe your midwife recommended it. Maybe another mom brought it up in a Facebook group.
But what does Webster certified actually mean?
And perhaps more importantly, what does a Webster Technique appointment look like for you?
The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment commonly used while caring for pregnant patients. It focuses on the pelvis, sacrum, and the muscles and ligaments surrounding them.
At MomWell Chiro Co., both of our chiropractors are Webster certified and regularly care for women throughout every stage of pregnancy.
Why Does the Pelvis Matter During Pregnancy?
Your body goes through a lot of physical changes as your baby grows.
Your center of gravity shifts. Your posture changes. Your abdominal muscles stretch. The joints, muscles, and ligaments around your hips and pelvis have to adapt to increasing weight and pressure.
You may begin noticing:
Lower back discomfort
Hip pain
Pelvic or pubic bone pain
Tightness through one side of your body
Discomfort while walking
Pain when rolling over in bed
Difficulty getting in or out of the car
Tension through the glutes, hips, or round ligaments
During a Webster Technique assessment, your chiropractor looks at the way your pelvis and sacrum are moving and whether surrounding muscles or ligaments appear tight, tender, or imbalanced.
We are not only asking, “Where does it hurt?”
We are looking at how your body is moving as a whole and what may be contributing to the discomfort you are feeling.
Does the Webster Technique Turn Breech Babies?
This is one of the most important misconceptions to clear up.
The Webster Technique is not a technique used to manually turn a baby.
A chiropractor does not push on the baby, reposition the baby, or perform an external cephalic version.
The technique is performed on the pregnant patient and focuses on chiropractic assessment and adjustment of the sacrum and pelvis. The International Chiropractic Pediatric Association describes Webster certification as specialized training in chiropractic analysis and adjustment of the pelvis.
You may hear women talk about seeking Webster-certified care when their baby is breech, transverse, or in another position. However, chiropractic care should not be presented as a guaranteed way to change a baby’s position.
Our role is to care for your body, not to make promises about your baby’s position or your eventual birth outcome.
What Does Webster Certified Mean?
A Webster-certified chiropractor has completed additional education and demonstrated proficiency in the Webster Technique.
The International Chiropractic Pediatric Association’s certification process includes focused instruction along with written and hands-on evaluation.
That additional training matters because caring for a pregnant patient is different from caring for the average adult.
A prenatal chiropractor should understand how to:
Modify care for each trimester
Position a pregnant patient comfortably
Assess the changing pelvis and spine
Use pregnancy-appropriate adjustments
Address surrounding muscles and ligaments
Recognize when symptoms require referral to another provider
Work alongside OBs, midwives, doulas, and pelvic floor therapists
Webster certification does not mean that every chiropractor practices in exactly the same way, but it tells you that the chiropractor has pursued specific training related to this technique and pregnancy care.
What Happens During a Webster Technique Appointment?
At MomWell, your appointment begins with a conversation.
We want to know:
How far along you are
How your pregnancy has been going
Where you feel discomfort
Which movements make it better or worse
How you are sleeping
What activities you are doing
What you hope to get out of care
We may then assess your posture, walking pattern, spinal movement, pelvic movement, and areas of muscular tension.
Your care may include a gentle chiropractic adjustment along with soft tissue work around areas such as your lower back, hips, glutes, or surrounding pelvic muscles and ligaments.
Depending on what your body needs that day, we may also use:
Pregnancy-specific stretches
Mobility exercises
Gentle muscle release
Cupping
Kinesiology tape
Birth preparation movements
Sleeping or sitting recommendations
Exercises to practice between visits
At MomWell, Webster care is not a rushed adjustment followed by a quick goodbye.
We take time to understand what your body is doing and give you practical ways to support yourself outside the office, too.
Is the Webster Technique Painful?
Webster Technique care should be adapted to your body, trimester, and comfort level.
At MomWell, we use pregnancy-friendly tables, pillows, and positioning so that you do not have to lie uncomfortably on your growing belly.
Many pregnant patients are surprised by how gentle their care feels.
You may experience tenderness when we work with a tight or irritated muscle, just as you might during stretching or soft tissue therapy. However, you should always feel comfortable communicating with us.
We explain what we are doing before we do it, and you can ask us to pause, modify, or skip any part of the appointment.
When Should You Begin Webster Technique Care?
There is no single perfect week to begin.
Some women establish care during the first trimester because they already see a chiropractor or begin experiencing discomfort early.
Others start during the second trimester as their belly grows and their posture begins to shift.
Many patients first visit us during the third trimester because they are experiencing more noticeable hip, pelvic, rib, or lower back discomfort.
You do not have to wait until something hurts badly to schedule an appointment.
You also do not have to be in the final weeks of pregnancy or have concerns about your baby’s position to benefit from seeing a Webster-certified chiropractor.
Webster Technique care can be one part of supporting your comfort and movement throughout pregnancy.
How Often Should You See a Webster-Certified Chiropractor?
There is no one schedule that is right for every pregnant woman.
How often you come in may depend on:
How far along you are
The symptoms you are experiencing
How your body responds to care
Your daily activity level
Previous injuries
Your comfort and preferences
Your personal pregnancy and birth goals
At MomWell, we do not believe every patient should automatically receive the same plan.
We will talk with you about what we find, explain our recommendations, and help you choose an approach that feels realistic and appropriate for your pregnancy.
Can Webster Technique Care Guarantee an Easier Labor?
No chiropractor or other provider can guarantee a shorter labor, a vaginal delivery, a specific fetal position, or a particular birth experience.
Webster Technique care should not be presented as a promise that your pregnancy or labor will unfold in a certain way.
What prenatal chiropractic care may offer is additional support for your comfort, mobility, and musculoskeletal function while your body adapts to pregnancy.
Our goal is to help you feel informed, cared for, and more confident in the way your body is moving.
