What Does a Prenatal Chiropractor Actually Do?
MomWell Chiro Co. is an award-winning prenatal, postpartum, pediatric, and family chiropractic practice located in North Fort Worth, Texas, 76244. Our Webster-certified chiropractors provide personalized care for pregnant women, babies, children, and families throughout the North Fort Worth and DFW area.
Pregnancy changes your body in so many ways, and sometimes it feels like those changes happen almost overnight.
One week you may feel great. The next, you are wondering why your hips hurt when you roll over in bed, why your lower back feels tired by lunchtime, or why getting out of the car suddenly requires a full strategy.
Some discomfort may be common during pregnancy, but that does not mean you have to spend nine months simply pushing through it.
That is where prenatal chiropractic care may help.
At MomWell Chiro Co., we do much more than adjust your back and send you on your way. We take time to understand how your body is feeling, how you are moving, where you may be holding tension, and what kind of support may be most helpful during your pregnancy.
Your Body Is Doing a Lot
As your baby grows, your center of gravity shifts, your posture changes, and your muscles and joints have to continually adapt.
These changes may contribute to discomfort in your:
Lower back
Hips
Pelvis
Pubic bone
Tailbone
Rib cage
Neck
Shoulders
You may also notice discomfort when walking, exercising, climbing stairs, standing up, sleeping, or rolling over in bed.
During a prenatal chiropractic visit, we look at how your spine, pelvis, hips, and surrounding muscles are working together.
We are not only focused on the one spot that hurts. We want to understand the bigger picture and determine what may be contributing to the way you feel.
What Happens at a Prenatal Chiropractic Appointment?
First, we talk.
We want to know how far along you are, how your pregnancy has been going, where you feel uncomfortable, what makes your symptoms better or worse, and what you are hoping to get out of care.
We may also look at:
Your posture
The way you walk
How your hips and pelvis are moving
Areas of muscular tension
Mobility through your spine and pelvis
Movements or positions that increase your discomfort
Your visit may include gentle chiropractic adjustments, soft tissue work, spinning babies movements, stretching, mobility exercises, taping, cupping, or personalized recommendations you can use at home.
No two appointments are exactly the same because no two pregnancies are exactly the same.
We also want you to feel completely comfortable throughout your visit. We explain what we are doing, answer your questions, and tailor your care to your preferences.
You are always welcome to speak up, ask us to pause, or decline any part of care.
What Does Webster Certified Mean?
You may have heard the term “Webster certified” while searching for a prenatal chiropractor.
The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic analysis and technique used during pregnancy. It focuses on the pelvis and the muscles and ligaments surrounding it.
A Webster-certified chiropractor has completed additional training related to caring for pregnant patients.
One important thing to know is that the Webster Technique is not a method used to manually turn a baby.
Instead, it focuses on the pregnant patient’s pelvic function and on addressing tension or imbalance in the surrounding muscles and ligaments.
Both chiropractors at MomWell Chiro Co. are Webster certified and regularly care for women throughout all stages of pregnancy.
Is Prenatal Chiropractic Care Just an Adjustment?
Not at MomWell.
Chiropractic adjustments are only one part of what we do.
Pregnancy discomfort may be influenced by joint movement, muscle tension, posture, exercise, sleeping positions, previous injuries, daily habits, and the normal physical changes happening throughout pregnancy.
Depending on what your body needs, your appointment may also include:
Gentle muscle release
Pregnancy-specific stretching
Mobility exercises
Cupping
Kinesiology taping
Recommendations for sleeping or sitting more comfortably
Exercises to practice at home
Birth preparation movements and positions
Guidance for lifting, exercising, or moving more comfortably
Our goal is for you to leave feeling supported and to understand your body a little better than you did when you arrived.
When Should You Start Prenatal Chiropractic Care?
There is not one perfect time to begin prenatal chiropractic care.
Some women come in during the first trimester because they are already experiencing discomfort or want to support their body early in pregnancy.
Others begin during the second trimester as their belly grows and their posture begins to change.
Many women find us during the third trimester because their hips, pelvis, ribs, or lower back are becoming more uncomfortable, or because they want additional physical support as they prepare for labor.
You do not have to wait until you are miserable to schedule an appointment.
It may be easier to support your body proactively than to wait until everyday movement becomes difficult.
And if you are already well into your third trimester, it may not be too late to begin. We can talk through what you are experiencing and what type of care may be appropriate for you.
Is Prenatal Chiropractic Care Gentle?
Yes. Prenatal chiropractic care should always be adapted for pregnancy.
At MomWell, we use pregnancy-friendly tables, pillows, and positioning to help you stay comfortable.
Your care is modified based on your trimester, symptoms, comfort level, and personal preferences.
Many pregnant women are surprised by how gentle their appointment feels.
You will not be expected to lie in an uncomfortable position, and we will explain what we are doing before we do it.
Can Prenatal Chiropractic Care Guarantee an Easier Labor?
No provider can guarantee a specific pregnancy or birth outcome.
Prenatal chiropractic care cannot guarantee a shorter labor, a certain fetal position, a vaginal delivery, or a pain-free pregnancy.
What it may do is support your comfort, movement, and physical function while your body is doing the incredible work of growing a baby.
Our goal is not to make promises. It is to help you feel cared for, informed, and physically supported throughout your pregnancy.
How Does Prenatal Chiropractic Fit Into Your Birth Team?
Chiropractic care does not replace your OB, midwife, doula, pelvic floor therapist, or other medical providers.
In many cases, women feel most supported when they have a team of professionals who each bring a different area of expertise.
We regularly collaborate with:
Obstetricians
Midwives
Doulas
Pelvic floor physical therapists
Lactation consultants
Birth educators
Pediatric providers
Our role is to support your muscles, joints, movement, comfort, and overall physical function throughout pregnancy and postpartum recovery.
